[ font concept ]

inspired by the font raleigh by robert norton in 1977, this typeface emphasizes the elegant curves and coils that guide the naked eye. each character feels interconnected, as if part of a continuous, unfolding pattern. echoing the nautilus shell’s organic design, this typeface features smooth contours and rounded forms that spiral with quiet precision. its shapes feel biological yet controlled, creating a sense of natural rhythm across every letterform.

[ process ]

there were countless iterations and small changes made with this typeface, which made me appreciate those who design typefaces and their attention to detail. its fascintating to see the miniscule changes that were edited for each week of both uppercase and lowercase.

[ the letterforms ]

while designing this typeface, i was constantly thinking about ways to stay consistent with each letterform’s contrast, and taking note of areas that need more attention to detail. i also wanted to make sure the letterforms did not feel too sharp, maintaining humanistic qualities with each organic line.

[ specimen newspaper ]

utilizing newspaper club to print my work, i selected a light salmon shade for my printing materials, which ties into the font’s concept and historic content. within the design, hints of nautlius shells, symbols and text that reminded me of the form were incorporated into the pages of the newspaper.

[ page variations ]

throughout the weeks, i designed many pages for the newspaper, incorporating a mixture of muted and vibrant colors to tie in the font’s concept and historical facts. including imagery of the nautilus shell also helped inspire more structural layouts and color choices within this process.

[ specimen poster ]

the poster design was split in half to showcase the forms in both black and white. it was interesting to see the contrast and differences in the letters, despite being the same point sizes and weight. i played with larger groups of text and display titles, seeing how the font could be used with different purposes. this process made me understand what this font is capable of and the extent of how much i can push its concept and character.

[ applications ]

to envision what this typeface could be used for, i designed various prints, receipts, and extra print collateral, playing with the idea of layering and curved design of the shell. i enjoyed the feeling of elegance and clarity the typeface carried through.
